From Struggling Student to Scholarship Winner: Akosua's BECE Relief Journey

By The Chalk Talk Team May 23, 2026

A Story of Determination

Akosua Asare, a 16-year-old from Tema New Town, always dreamed of becoming a nurse. But as the eldest of four children raised by a single mother who sells kenkey at the local market, the path to that dream seemed impossibly out of reach.

"There were days I went to school hungry," Akosua recalls. "I would sit in class and think about my mother working so hard, and I knew I had to make her proud. But without textbooks or extra lessons, I was falling behind."

Everything changed when a teacher told her mother about the Chalk Talk Foundation's BECE Relief Project. The program provided Akosua with complete textbooks, weekly tutorial classes, and a mentor who checked in on her progress every week.

The Turning Point

"The tutorials were different from regular classes," Akosua explains. "They taught us how to approach exam questions, manage our time, and believe in ourselves. For the first time, I felt like I could actually pass my BECE."

Her hard work paid off. Akosua scored aggregate 08 in her BECE ÔÇö one of the best results in her school. The foundation helped her secure a full scholarship to Tema Senior High School, where she is now pursuing General Science.

Paying It Forward

Today, Akosua volunteers as a tutor with the same BECE Relief Project that changed her life. Every Saturday morning, she helps current JHS students with their Mathematics and Science classes.

"I want every child to know that their circumstances do not define their future," she says. "Someone believed in me, and now I want to believe in others."
