How the Tema Honours Awards Are Building a Culture of Community Service
More Than a Ceremony
Every year, the Tema Honours Awards brings together hundreds of community members to celebrate the people who make Tema a better place. But the awards are much more than a single evening of appreciation ÔÇö they are a catalyst for a growing culture of community service across the metropolis.
When Madam Grace Amankwah, a public school teacher of 32 years, received the Education Champion Award, she says something shifted. "For three decades, I taught without expecting any recognition. When the community said 'thank you' in such a public way, it reminded me why I started teaching in the first place. I renewed my commitment to stay for five more years instead of retiring."
The Ripple Effect
Since the Tema Honours Awards began, we have seen a measurable increase in volunteerism across the community. Local businesses that were once reluctant to sponsor school programs are now stepping forward. Young professionals are signing up to mentor students. Retired teachers are offering free after-school tutoring.
"I attended the awards ceremony two years ago and was so inspired by the youth category winner that I started a Saturday coding club at my church," says Nana Yaw Osei, a software engineer in Tema. "Now we have 40 kids learning programming every weekend."
Recognising Unsung Heroes
The awards cover eight categories: Education Champion, Health Hero, Community Service, Youth Leadership, Arts & Culture, Environmental Stewardship, Business for Good, and Lifetime Achievement. Nominees come from community submissions, ensuring that the process is grassroots and inclusive.
Last year's standout moment came when Kweku Arthur, a 68-year-old fisherman who has spent 20 years teaching children in his community to swim for free, won the Community Service award. "I never thought what I do was special," he said, holding back tears. "I just wanted the children to be safe in the water."
How You Can Get Involved
The Tema Honours Awards are powered by community participation. You can nominate someone you admire, volunteer on the organising committee, or sponsor a category. Every contribution strengthens the fabric of our community.
The next awards ceremony will be held at the Tema Community Centre. Nominations open in September. Watch our website and social media channels for details.
